A free Table Tennis Clinic is underway in Lahaina through Aug. 26. The Philippines’ national head coach of the juniors team is offering instruction from 8 to 10 a.m. on weekdays in the Lahaina Civic Center gym. Bring shoes and paddle if you have one. LAHAINA — In partnership with local organizations, the state is launching a new statewide training series for Makai Watch volunteers.

Offered through the state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) and Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), the training will feature a newly standardized Makai Watch volunteer incident observation and reporting program.

This program is targeted toward volunteers interested in assisting DLNR to effectively manage Hawaii’s nearshore marine resources by serving as the “eyes and ears” of conservation enforcement in the community.

The first training session in the series will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, at the West Maui Senior Center at 788 Pauoa St. in Lahaina.

The Makai Watch Program is a partnership effort between the state DLNR and non-governmental organizations, including The Nature Conservancy, Hawaii Community Stewardship Network, Hawaii Wildlife Fund, Coral Reef Alliance and Project S.E.A.-Link.

The goal is to enhance the management of near-shore marine resources by providing community members opportunities for direct involvement in management activities.
