Jamie Hagiya to lead hoops clinics
LAHAINA — The Lahainaluna High School girls basketball team will begin its off-season training program with a three-day clinic led by former USC standout and current European professional player Jamie Hagiya.
The Lady Lunas solidified their position as one of the top programs in the state by winning their seventh consecutive Maui Interscholastic League championship this year and advancing to the final four of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association state tournament — after winning it all in 2010.
Hagiya comes to Lahaina with a sterling resume that includes leading her South Torrance High School team in Southern California to three straight Ocean League championships and being honored as the league MVP for all three years; a four-year career at Division I USC of the Pac-10 Conference, in which she was twice the Trojans’ team captain, led the league in the assist/turnover ratio as a junior, helped the team reach the second round of the NCAA tournament twice, and finished her college career fourth in career assists and second in three-pointers.
She has played professional basketball in Greece, and most recently in Spain.
The three-day clinic for the Lady Lunas at Lahaina Civic Center will begin on Sunday, April 3, at 2 p.m., followed immediately by a one-hour special session set for any interested players from the West Maui Youth Basketball League.
The practices will continue on Monday and Tuesday and run from 2:30 to 5 p.m.
Coach Hagiya will cover ball handling, shooting and defensive techniques during the clinic.
