Eight golf legends took center stage in the 2011 Kaanapali Champions Skins Game on Jan. 29-30 at the Royal Kaanapali Golf Course. More than 4,000 people came out to watch the contest each day. The team of Jack Nicklaus (pictured) and Tom Watson won the most holes and took home $310,000, followed by Bernhard Langer and Mark O’Meara ($300,000), Fuzzy Zoeller and Ben Crenshaw ($80,000) and Fred Couples and Nick Price ($80,000). Nicklaus said, “It’s a blast to compete with these guys that are 15-20 years younger than me, it really is.” Watson commented on his teammate, “How great is it to be able to get up on the first tee and say that my partner is Jack Nicklaus; I mean how great is that?”
The 37-foot Bertram Start Me Up Das It was a close second place boat. It weighed seven blue marlin (tied for second most) totaling 2,796.4 pounds (highest blue weight) and three spearfish (tied for third most) totaling 82.4 pounds.
The boat’s seven blue marlin (tied for fourth most captured) totaled 2,714.0 pounds (highest blue marlin weight). Its ten billfish (tied for third most captured) weighed a grand total of 2,796.4 pounds (highest total weight).
The Start Me Up Das It weighed the third largest blue marlin for the year (688.1 pounds) with two others over 400 pounds: 485.1 (good for 12th place) and 462.2 pounds (17th).
The 37-foot Merritt Finest Kind took the third place spot. It weighed six blue marlin (third most) totaling 1,432 pounds (fourth highest blue weight), four spearfish (second most) totaling 178 pounds (second highest total weight) and a rare 76.2-pound sailfish. The 11 billfish weighed (tied for second most weighed) totaled 1,685.2 pounds (fourth highest total weighed).
The Finest Kind also released two blue marlin estimated at 550 total pounds. This gave them a total of eight blue marlin captured (tied for third most) totaling 1,981.0 pounds (fifth highest blue marlin capture weight).
The boat’s 13 billfish (tied for second most captured) weighed a grand total of 2,235.2 pounds (fifth highest total weight).
The Finest Kind weighed six ahi over 100 pounds (most among the fleet) totaling 790 pounds (highest total weight). It landed 164.3- (first), 158.3- (third) and a 137.6-pound (fourth) ahi.
The Start Me Up finished in fourth place among the fleet. It weighed seven blue marlin (tied for second most) totaling 2,159.5 pounds (third highest blue weight) and two spearfish totaling 81 pounds. The nine billfish weighed (fourth most) totaled 2,240.5 pounds (third highest total weighed).
It released one blue marlin estimated at 250 pounds. This gave the boat eight blue marlin captured (tied for third most) totaling 2,490.5 pounds (fourth highest blue marlin capture weight).
The boat’s ten billfish (tied for third most captured) weighed a grand total of 2,490.5 pounds (third highest total weight).
The Start Me Up weighed the fifth largest blue marlin (641.0 pounds). It also weighed a 491.6-pound (11th) blue marlin and a 100.9-pound ahi.
The 41-foot Hatteras Hinatea rounded out the top five boats. It weighed four blue marlin (tied for fifth most) totaling 1,416.6 pounds (fifth highest blue weight) and a 30-pound spearfish. The five billfish weighed (seventh most) totaled 1,446.6 pounds (fifth highest total weighed).
It also released five blue marlin (most released) estimated at 1,025 pounds (highest release weight). This gave the boat nine blue marlin captured (second most) totaling 2,441.6 pounds (third highest blue marlin capture weight).
The boat’s ten billfish (tied for third most captured) weighed a grand total of 2,471.6 pounds (fourth highest total weight). The Hinatea also weighed the tenth largest blue marlin at 511.6 pounds.
