Hyundai Tournament of Champions Week to feature new activities

By Staff | Dec 30, 2010

Trick shot artist Dan Boever will perform at the FedExCup Kick-Off event that starts at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at The Plantation Course. “My greatest joy professionally is being able to perform for people and see smiles appear on their faces... Performing golf shows is as fun today as it was on day one,” he said.

KAPALUA — The Hyundai Tournament of Champions, the PGA Tour’s 2011 season-opening event that features an elite field of 2010 tournament winners, will debut new activities for tournament week on Jan. 2-9 that are free to the public.

This year, the tournament is offering free admission, free parking and free week-long activities for the whole family.

Starting Sunday, Jan. 2, the Hyundai Tournament of Champions’ “Family Fun Day” benefitting Hawaii State Junior Golf Association will feature free lunch for the first 200 kids sponsored by CJ’s Deli and Diner and other activities, including Polynesian Village Luau Cultural activities, All-Star card giveaways and prizes, Maui Humane Society’s “Animobile,” taiko drummers and much more!

The event will also feature a Pro/Celebrity/Junior Golfer Shootout — players will include defending champion Geoff Ogilvy, Justin Rose and Rocco Mediate — and a concert by Anuhea.

On Wednesday, Jan. 5, Kapalua will launch the season with the FedExCup Kick-Off at 2 p.m., featuring entertainment by Keali’i Reichel and Jake Shimabukuro; performance by trick shot artist and long drive champion Dan Boever; Long Drive Competition with Bubba Watson, two-time World Long Drive Champion Jamie Sadlowski, Dustin Johnson and Robert Garrigus.

Defending champion Geoff Ogilvy and other PGA Tour stars will play in the first Pro/Celebrity/Junior Golfer Shootout at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Also on Wednesday, the Pro/Celebrity Charity Challenge will feature 1010 FedExCup Champion Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim, Dustin Johnson, Graeme McDowell, Kelly Slater and more, all to be telecast live on the Golf Channel!

The Golf Channel will air the FedExCup Kick-Off live from 3 to 5 p.m. in Hawaii.

“We look forward to being even more fan-friendly at The Plantation Course, and it all begins with free admission to the 2011 event,” said Tournament Director Nancy Cross.

“Our goal is to create fan zones in key areas, which will have multiple events going on for all age groups.”

Featuring a field of event winners from the 2010 PGA Tour, the 2011 Hyundai Tournament of Champions will begin with a blessing by Clifford Naeole on Jan. 6 at 9 a.m.

After each round of the tournament on Jan. 6-9, there will be music in the Spectator Village after the last putt drops.
