Golf tournament raises funds for Maui’s future leaders

By Staff | Aug 19, 2010

“We are pleased to offer such a great program to high school students — our future business leaders — and contribute to workforce development,” said Carol Reimann, executive director for the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association.

WAILUKU — The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association’s 14th annual Excellence in Education Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, Aug. 27, at Kaanapali Golf Resort.

The 7 a.m. shotgun start contest will be followed by an awards luncheon.

This popular event provides funds for the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism (AOHT) program, scholarship funds for University of Hawaii Maui College students in the Culinary and Business & Hospitality programs, and a donation to Maui Junior Golf.

The AOHT program administered by the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association is a two-year curriculum that emphasizes academic excellence while exposing students to the “real world.”

AOHT’s primary goal is to prepare students for post-secondary education and cultivate workforce development in one of the world’s largest service industries.

The program provides students with valuable exposure to the industry via internships, job shadowing, research and event planning, service projects, job site visits, university visits and travel.

“The AOHT program offers students a unique opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of the visitor industry. Many of these students continue on to post-secondary education with a head-start in selecting their field of study,” said Carol Reimann, executive director for the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association.

The Excellence in Education Golf Tournament is open to the public. Advanced registration is required. Information on individual and team fees, sponsorships and registration forms are available online at www.mauihla.org or may be requested by contacting the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association office at 244-8625 or info@mauihla.org.

Prizes will be awarded to the top ten teams, including items donated by members of the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association, such as accommodation stays, dining certificates, golf certificates, great merchandise and more.

The tourney also includes a putting contest sponsored by Oceanic Time Warner Cable. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to win some great prizes and be a part of a fun and worthy event!

The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association is a nonprofit organization founded in 1987 to advocate for the visitor industry.

The organization also provides for workforce development through the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism and gives back to the community through the annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk, golf tournament and Kupuna Dinner.
