Legendary tennis coach to offer junior clinic at Wailea

By Staff | Nov 5, 2009

WAILEA — In his illustrious career, tennis coach Tom Gullikson has helped such renowned pros as Jennifer Capriati, Todd Martin, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. This month, the former captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team and Olympic tennis coach will conduct a 90-minute clinic for interested junior tennis players at Wailea Tennis Club.

“We’re thrilled to have this amazing opportunity with Tom,” said Cathy Nicoloff, director of tennis at Wailea Tennis Club.

“He’s a phenomenal instructor and oversees many of the top junior players in the country. We hope many of our junior tennis players will take advantage of this rare chance to work with one of the very best teachers in the country.”

Gullikson will be on Maui for the annual Wailea Fantasy Camp, a five-day instructional program for avid tennis players hosted by Wailea Tennis Club and Four Seasons Resort Maui.

This year’s camp, scheduled for Nov. 18-22, will include instruction by Gullikson, Tracy Austin, Lindsay Davenport and Corina Morariu.

His junior clinic will take place on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and is open to junior players of all ages. The clinic fee is $40 per student, which includes free admission to an exhibition match featuring Gullikson, Austin, Davenport and Morariu.

The exhibition match is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m., just preceding the junior clinic. Spectator tickets for just the exhibition match are also available for $20 per adult and $10 per junior.

Gullikson served as the U.S. Davis Cup captain from 1994-99, leading the American team to victory in 1995. He coached the U.S. Olympic Team in 1996 and helped Agassi win the gold medal.

Currently, he works with Jose Higarius and Tracy Austin at the USTA Training Center in Carson, California, and was recently appointed by the International Tennis Federation as the United States’ delegate to the Davis Cup Committee.

To register for the junior clinic with Gullikson, stop by Wailea Tennis Club during regular business hours: 8 a.m. to noon and 3 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
