The West Maui Power Lifters took second in the team competition. This was the first time a Maui team finished in the top three places.

LAHAINA — Sonny’s Fifth Annual Bench Press and Dead Lift Championships were held on July 5 at the Hawaii Convention Center on Oahu.

More than 100 lifters from California, Colorado, Hawaii, Louisiana, Oregon and Washington competed, along with eight lifters from Maui.

For team Maui, 2008 World Open and Master Women Division champion Elizabeth Cabe took first place in the Open and Master Women Division, 97-pound weight class, 40-47 age class with a new state record of 270 pounds in the dead lift. She also set a new Master Women Division, 97-pound weight class state record with a 93-pound bench press.

Velma Panlasigui took first place in the Open and Master Women Division, 132-pound weight class, 40-47 age class with a new state record in the dead lift of 288 pounds.

Ciu Whitehead, in her first contest, took first place in the Master Women Division, 123-pound weight class, 40-47 age class, with a 242-pound dead lift, setting a new state record. She also took first place in the 123-pound weight class with a 66-pound bench press — also a new state record.

Gilbert Shibao took first place in the Master Men Division, 259-pound weight class, 40-47 age class in both the Open and Law Enforcement Master Division in the bench press with a new state record of 485 pounds.

Keoki Dacuycuy took first place in the Submaster Men Division, 242-pound weight class, 34-39 age class with a 435-pound bench press. He also took first place in the dead lift (535 pounds).

Kellon Quinioneza, in his first contest, took first in the 259-pound, Junior Men Division, 20-25 age class, with a new state record of 585 pounds in the dead lift.

Christian Tangatailog and Bronson Comanse both competed in the Teen Men Division in the dead lift. Christian won in the 123-pound weight class, 13-14 age group, with a new state record of 281 pounds. Bronson took second in the 181-pound weight class, 15-16 age class, with a lift of 308 pounds.

Velma and Elizabeth will both represent Hawaii in the World Championships in Reno, Nevada in October. The team was coached by Craig Desoto and Mike Whitehead.
