Final EIS submitted for DLNR Industrial and Business Park
PUUNENE – The state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) recently submitted to the State of Hawaii the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed DLNR Industrial and Business Park in Puunene.
The 280-acre project would feature a mix of light industrial, commercial and public/quasi-public uses.
Key components of the plan include development of small, medium and large lots to meet varying needs of future lessees, along with the provision of required infrastructure systems (wastewater, water and drainage, for example).
The purpose of the project is to generate revenue to support DLNR’s programs.
Located in the vicinity of the Old Puunene Airport, the project includes a 20.3-acre site for the Division of Forestry and Wildlife administrative facilities and baseyard.
The DLNR park would include small, medium and large lots for light industrial, commercial, government and nonprofit use.
Although the plan proposes an interior subdivision of the lands, it would allow larger or smaller lots to be provided to potential lessees to meet their specific land requirements.
The layout provides DLNR with some flexibility to meet lot requirements specified by future lessees
Internal roadway networks would be developed as part of the park, which would be accessed via a proposed signalized intersection off of Maui Veterans Highway, as well as the existing Kama’aina Road, South Firebreak Road and the Maui Raceway Park access road.
The use of state lands and funds is a trigger for compliance with Chapter 343, Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS), and the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was prepared.
Lease revenues generated by the project will support divisions within the DLNR, including the Commission on Water Resource Management, Division of Forestry and Wildlife, State Parks, Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands, Engineering Division, and Land Division.
