County to host fair housing training

By Staff | Mar 21, 2019

KAHULUI – A free training session on fair housing laws and procedures will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on April 12 at the University of Hawaii Maui College Ike Lea Building, Room 144, the county Department of Housing and Human Concerns announced.

The department’s Housing Division is hosting the event in partnership with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Hawaii Civil Rights Commission and Legal Aid Society of Hawaii.

The training is free and open to the public.

It is well-suited for landlords, renters, real estate agents, property managers, condominium owner association board members and others who may be housing or service providers.

The training will review federal and state fair housing laws, summarize fair housing complaint and investigation procedures and go into depth on special topics related to protected classes.

Fair housing laws prohibit housing discrimination based on a variety of protected classes.

Federal protected classes include race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, familial status and disability.

State laws also protect marital status, ancestry, age or HIV infection.

The registration form has been posted on the county housing website at www.mauicounty.gov/DocumentCenter/View/115809/2019-April-Fair-Housing-Flyer-and-Registration.

Anyone interested may either call the Housing Division office at 270-7351 or e-mail Jessica.Crouse@co.maui.hi.us.
