Putting ART in the hearts of people
For years, Maui Arts League, a non-profit organization, has been elevating fine art within our Maui community while creating unique opportunities for people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds to embrace the experience of art. For the past ten years, Kaanapali Land Management Corp. has been proud to support their efforts through sponsorship of their signature event, the annual Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational (MPAPI).
The 2019 MPAPI kicked off on February 16th with 23 professional plein air painters from Hawaii, United States Mainland and Australia capturing images of Maui the people, the scenery mauka to makai, and the island’s historical sites. The public has been enjoying seeing these artists create inspiring artworks, attending art sales, and educational events. And, there’s still more to experience with an exciting schedule of finale events happening this week:
On Friday, February 22, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., stroll Kaanapali Beach between Royal Lahaina Resort to Black Rock as well as the grounds of the Royal Lahaina Resort while you watch the artists create their final paintings for the MPAPI “Quick Draw.” It will be fascinating to watch and even more exciting to see all 23 paintings collectively displayed and available for sale in the hotel’s Ocean Terrace Restaurant from 12 noon to 1 p.m. This year, for the first time, a painting will be selected to receive a $250 Maui Arts League’s Quick Draw Award. The Quick Draw will be judged by George Allan, one of Maui’s legendary artists. This event is sponsored by Maui No Ka ‘Oi Magazine.
Later that day, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., enjoy an exciting evening during the “Art to Heart Gala Awards & Art Sale” at the Royal Lahaina Resort Ballroom. Mingle with the 23 MPAPI artists while you enjoy a champagne reception, gourmet dining, smooth live jazz, and 100 original paintings for purchase. Tickets are $195 per person. This event is sponsored by Royal Lahaina Resort.
On Saturday, February 23, an “Artists’ Aloha Reception & Art Sale” will be held at the Royal Lahaina Resort Ballroom. Enjoy a Collectors’ “Take an Artist to Breakfast Buffet” for you and an artist ($62) from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Then view award paintings plus new paintings and enjoy light refreshments at the reception and art sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by an Artists’ Panel Discussion with Q&A from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. (public admission is free).
The finale will be an “Artists’ Mahalo Gathering & Art Sale” held at the Royal Lahaina Resort Ballroom on Sunday, February 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. View award paintings plus new paintings and enjoy light refreshments from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A “Building a fine arts Museum on West Maui Panel Discussion with Q&A” follows from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. (public admission is free).
The MPAPI is truly a celebration of art, and Maui Arts League is dedicated to putting art in the hearts of people.
