‘Coffee pride’ at Ka‘anapali Coffee Farms
KAANAPALI – At Ka`anapali Coffee Farms, pride of ownership transcends more than the magnificent views and the one-of-a-kind lifestyle to be found in this true agriculture community. For many, it’s all about the coffee and the legacy they are leaving for future generations.
Coffee in West Maui has come into its own since the first coffee crop was planted by Pioneer Mill Company over 25 years ago. Today, sales of MauiGrown Coffee harvested from the coffee orchards at Ka`anapali Coffee Farms continues to increase at a record pace thanks to a growing demand and a loyal market niche.
In 2014, over 400,000 pounds of MauiGrown’s coffee was sold in Hawaii, the U.S. Mainland, and several international locations. Customers include internationally recognized brands as well as small boutique roasters and coffee shops, including the popular MauiGrown Coffee Company Store in Lahaina. In order to meet the growing demand, an additional five to ten acres of seedlings have been planted each year for the last three years, and the pace of the new plantings is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.
For Ka`anapali Coffee Farms owners, sales of coffee produced on the farm have an added perk – helping to reduce their owners’ assessments and increase association reserves. Recently, the Board of Directors of Ka`anapali Coffee Farms Lot Owners Association returned to the owners all of the assessments paid in fiscal year 2014.
“This return was made possible with the continuing successful partnerships we have established with our farming and sales experts,” said Jeff Rebugio, Ka`anapali Coffee Farms Lot Owners Association president. “We are very grateful to all our lot owners for sharing our vision for a thriving farming community in West Maui. As part of our agricultural family, they play an integral part in preserving the unique character of this community and helping to keep our farming operations green and thriving.”
Accolades continue to fuel Ka`anapali Coffee Farms owners’ coffee pride. On Jan. 6, 2015, MauiGrown Coffee Distributors was notified that they were awarded certification in Starbucks’ Coffee and Farmer Equity Practices (C.A.F.E.). This coffee-buying program ensures that Starbucks is sourcing sustainably grown and produced coffee by evaluating the economic, social, and environmental aspects of coffee production and processing in participating farms. The environmental standards and employment practices of MauiGrown Coffee were extensively examined by Starbucks’ environmental auditors, resulting in the certification.
