MHLA awards scholarships to U.H. Maui College students

WAILUKU – The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association recently awarded $6,000 in scholarships to six University of Hawaii Maui College Spring Semester students from proceeds of its annual Excellence in Education Golf Tournament held last August.

Three students from the Maui Culinary Academy (Melissa Haake, Josefina Sanchez and Koa Taylor) and three Business & Hospitality students (Jason Amby, Rhea Salvador and Shermila Sioson) each received a $1,000 scholarship. Students were recognized as outstanding achievers by their department coordinators.

Amby is currently pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality & Tourism with plans to work in the hotel industry.

Salvador is currently working on her Associate in Applied Science Degree in Hospitality & Tourism with plans to transfer to the U.H. School of Travel Industry Management to pursue her Bachelor’s Degree.

Sioson is currently working on her Associate in Applied Science Degree in Hospitality & Tourism with plans to transfer to West Oahu and pursue her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.

Haake is currently pursuing an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts with plans to obtain a position at one of Maui’s hotels.

Sanchez is currently pursuing an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts with plans to pursue a degree in hospitality and become an executive/sous chef one day.

Taylor will complete his Associate Degree in Culinary Arts in 2015 with plans to open his own restaurant one day.

These future industry leaders were honored at Maui No Ka Oi Magazine’s `Aipono Restaurant Awards gala last month at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea in the presence of hundreds of business and restaurant industry principals.

“It’s an honor to be able to provide for our future leaders. These students have excelled in their respective areas and have been justly awarded for their achievements. We look forward to watching these stellar students turn into the next generation of industry leaders,” said Lisa Paulson, MHLA executive director.

The 2014 Excellence in Education golf tournament will be held on Friday, Aug. 22. This popular event provides scholarships for U.H. Maui College students and Maui’s Academy of Hospitality & Tourism (AOHT) students.
