Maui voted one of the BEST ISLANDS, and Lahaina one of the HAPPIEST TOWNS to live in!
Looks like the secret’s out again! Coming in for the 17th year as one of the best islands in the world to live on, 21st year for a U.S. island, by Conde Nast Magazine, Maui is recognized for its great attributes. Just recently, Coastal Living Magazine called Lahaina one of the Top Ten “Happiest Seaside Towns” to live in.
Having lived here in Hawaii my whole life, and the last 26 years here on Maui, I agree wholeheartedly. So many wonderful places, activities, cultures and people all make this a wonderful place to call home.
So why do people want to buy real estate here on the island? Why pick up and move to a little island in the middle of the Pacific? What pull does this island have on its visitors? So many I can think of, but here are a few:
Food: There is a wide gamut of great variety of food choices – a venerable mixed plate of various ethnicities and all the goodies that each culture brings. Dim sum, pancit noodles, tempura, kalua pig, poke, sashimi, squid luau, pho, mochi, kulolo and the list goes on and on! Each culture brings a little treasure trove of their use of spices, herbs and interpretations of preparations to create their dishes. From this mix of cultures, we have developed our own Pacific Fusion cuisine that is recognized worldwide. With the myriad of traditions and celebrations, there is never a shortage of food at the potlucks from all corners of the Earth.
Activities: So many ways to enjoy the outdoors here on Maui. With year-round great weather and sunshine, it’s no wonder we boast world-class surfing, world-class golf and all the things in between. Activities range from beaches that offer great snorkeling, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, scuba diving, sailing, whale watching, beach volleyball and just lounging on the white sand beaches. Then there is hiking back into the West Maui Mountains, the Kapalua Arboretum, the old Pali Trail, Swinging Bridges, Hana and the Seven Sacred Pools, Haleakala, and so many other hidden gems to explore.
Yet, the best thing about Maui? It’s the lifestyle. The small town atmosphere. The feeling of community and neighbors create the fabric to get involved and be part of the whole. There is an easy going attitude – a slower, more appreciative pace to enjoy life and the island.
Many put down roots; some just come for a visit. Either way, it’s a recuperative place to be. That’s why Maui keeps coming in on the top of the lists for best island, happiest town and a place that the luckiest call home.
