Maui OnStage, Community Work Day and Whalers Realty Inc. are growing ‘The Garden of BE’

“The Garden of BE” Musical Score is surrounded by unique artwork.

When sound business principals and the arts join hands, the results can be world-changing. So it is with Maui Community Theater (a.k.a. Maui OnStage) and Community Work Day joining talents to launch Tess Cartwright’s joyous musical fantasy for all ages, “The Garden of BE,” and The Garden of Be Art Show.

The artful adventure combines colorful music, song and dance with the art of transforming ordinary reclaimed plastics into all manner of artworks that depict our natural world. How are these two worlds connected? Tess explained, “As I wrote the play in our real estate office at the Kahana Gateway Professional Center in 1993, I dreamed of what the set design would look like. As I lifted a clear plastic water bottle to take a drink, I saw the sparkling convolutions of a flower in the bottom of the bottle. The image seemed to speak to me saying, ‘I will be your garden.’ I lifted the scissors from my desk and began to cut. That magical moment propelled me into the unlimited possibilities that may be released from ordinary household plastics.”

The dream sequence of the musical’s Second Act opens with a guitar playing spaceman, The Great Conduit, accompanied by his Transisters: Transcend, Transform and Transmit. They sing, “If you don’t want to be lost in space where you won’t be found without a trace, Transcend, take to flight, close your eyes to see the light. Tranform, give up fear, lock out blame, this is how to play the game. Transmit, don’t be afraid, it is your own life you will save.”

You must BE there to get the full impact of the musical’s many forward-moving messages for people of all ages.

Maui music teacher Joseph DeRose wrote the music and is the musical director for “The Garden of BE.” Along with Director Steven Dascoulias, Choreographer Alexander Cardinalli, Costumes Designer Marsha Kelly, Set Designer Caro Walker and Stage Manager Michael Pullian, Tess’s musical is destined to accomplish her mission: “To Protect and Bring More Joy to the World.”
