On Saturday, Sept. 18, our principal broker, Monte Fitts, his nephew, Doug Fitts, and 15 other West Maui golfers traveled to Rooster Run Golf Course in Petaluma, California to participate in the second annual Nate Bloom Memorial Golf Tournament.

This year’s event raised over $62,000, with profits of $28,062 for Melanoma Cancer Research. Combined with last year’s total, the event has raised more than $63,062 so far.

There was also $18,000 worth of Bullfrog sunscreen donated from Raley’s Markets, which was distributed to local school sports programs.

No Shenanigans hosts the annual tournament in honor of Nate Bloom, the son of Maui residents Rob and Cindy Bloom, who lost his long battle with melanoma in 2008. He was just 30 years old.

In total, 126 golfers took part in the four-man scramble, and over 260 people attended the luncheon, auction and awards presentation.

There were keynote guest speakers from UCSF Melanoma Research Center (Dr. Adil Daud, Dr. Bruce Wintroub and Dr. Frank McNabb), SF Oncology renowned physician Dr. David Minor, and from the National Melanoma Research Foundation, executive director Tim Turnham.

Every 24 minutes, a family learns that a loved one has malignant melanoma. Their chance of survival is very poor. The disease is increasing at an alarming rate that is affecting an ever younger population. Patients as young as eight years old are currently in treatment. Much more work needs to be done to help educate and treat patients with this deadly disease.
