Maui Kai celebrates 40 years of success

Sunset at the Maui Kai is spectacular.

LAHAINA — Attributing its longevity and success to a dedication to true aloha spirit and embracing of ‘ohana, the Maui Kai Condominium recently celebrated its 40th anniversary.

The condominium officially opened in 1970.  At the time, it was the tallest building in the area at ten stories high, and it was situated at the end of the old Ka`anapali airport runway, still operating at the time.  A red light topped the building as a warning to airplanes; and, at one time, it was designated as a bomb shelter.

In the middle of pineapple and sugar cane fields, its closest neighbors were the airport; the Hilton, now the Ka`anapali Villas; the Maui Sands condominium; and ,a small store that sold a few grocery items, some Japanese goods and gas.

Now dwarfed by neighboring resorts, the Maui Kai has remained steadfast to its island roots and spirit, creating a true `ohana of employees and guests.

Through the years, repeat guests from all over the world reconnect not only at the Maui Kai but with the people they’ve met there, gathering at such unexpected places as the cornfields of Illinois and the urban streets of Tokyo, Japan.

The employees of Maui Kai are a significant part of the West Side`ohana and have developed close relationships. During the most recent economic struggle, the housekeeping staff made a team decision to each take a reduction in hours, so that no one would be laid off.  Guests and owners have also grown close to Maui Kai employees, stepping in to help with childcare when needed and acting as second mothers.

For all these reasons, on April 25th, 2010, owners and employees celebrated all the people who have made Maui Kai special.

Located on the Honokowai Point of Ka`anapali Beach, Maui Kai’s location is its most striking feature. Both Molokai and Lanai can be seen from each of the 79 unit lanais as well as whales, sea turtles, rays, dolphins and the occasional  monk seal.
