One-of-a-kind penthouse available at The Whaler

By Staff | Jun 11, 2009

This is an exciting time to be in the Maui real estate market, as it continues to see price negotiations and rare, hard-to-find listings that can be purchased at excellent prices.

In fact, I have a couple of very unique listings that stand out as rare gems, among other offerings, as they exemplify unbelievable, breathtaking, panoramic views.

The Whaler Penthouse 1201 on Kaanapali Beach: Tropical bird’s eye view from the lap of luxury

The crow’s nest of a tall ship can’t compete with the view, and a Park Avenue apartment can’t match it for style. The aura of deep luxury in the Penthouse Suite of The Whaler on Kaanapali Beach — rich hardwoods, marble, granite and onyx — are a mere prelude to the mind-bending panorama out its window: a view unmatched on Maui, an island renowned for its views.

“One-of-a-kind” has the ring of cliché, but this place truly merits the claim. Sitting on the 12th floor of Tower One at The Whaler in the heart of Kaanapali Resort, the Penthouse Suite was designed by the developer for his own use when the building went up. The two-bedroom suite (or three depending on your needs) occupies almost 2,000 square feet.

Before you marvel at the remarkable interior, your eyes are drawn across the living room out the windows and onto the 650-square-foot wraparound lanai where, from 12 stories up, you could drop a stone into the ocean. There, across from you, sit Molokai and Lanai, fixed points of interest across the channel. Nature’s display is breathtaking, but the focal point of resort beach activity is also right out front with swimmers, kayakers, snorkelers and surfers in nearby shore waters, with yachts and para-sailors beyond.

Once you’ve consumed the view that nature provides off your wraparound lanai, the amazing details inside the suite welcome you back to luxury. Off the main living room sits the office/den, completely surfaced in polished walnut, including coffered ceilings, rounded glass display cases and cabinetry befitting a wealthy cabinetmaker’s showcase. One paneled wall hides a Murphy bed that converts the office to a third bedroom.

A complete remodel of all but the woodwork was completed just over a year ago with nothing but the finest materials — marble and tile throughout, complemented with plush carpets. Stunning green onyx lifts an all-glass shower in one bedroom to work of art status, which carries over onto the nearby bathroom countertops.

Owner Robert Myers is listing the Penthouse Suite himself. He grins with pleasure when visitors observe how nicely the dark blue hue of the kitchen’s granite countertop picks up the ocean and sky tones out the kitchen window. Myers said one of his favorite things about the suite is being outside on the lanai, day or night, in the cool breeze, taking in a view that never ceases to amaze. At night, the waters reflect the stunning image of the moon and the surrounding mountains in the distance.

The Whaler Penthouse exemplifies the quality of the soon-to-be-completed project, which is the extensive renovation of The Whaler’s grounds. General Manager Rick Tanner believes that the upgrade to the surrounding common grounds will “bring the entire property up to the level of the Penthouse Suite.”

From the underground parking area to the apex of the only sky-lit entrance in Kaanapali Beach Resort, The Whaler is being renovated with a natural elegance and custom architecture and design. The Whaler is a premiere world-class resort destination.

Brainchild of Christ Hart & Associates’ landscape architect Bill Mitchell, the courtyard is designed to appeal to anyone with the ground level perspective, as well as the awe-inspiring bird’s eye view available from the 12th floor. His attention to detail is noted by three-dimensional sculpted landscaping, plantings that create privacy for ground floor lanais, and by the gentle blending of structures into a natural Hawaiian garden grotto. The renovation will be completed in a month, and we invite you to experience the glorious details lavished on the property.

The polished luxury interior, panoramic views, and top-of-the-line common grounds renovation make this the most exciting residence on Kaanapali Beach. The sky meets the Pacific, islands float on the horizon, and Black Rock punctuates the beach vista.
