KAHULUI – The Women’s March Maui will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the University of Hawaii Maui College front lawn.

The event will be an all-inclusive, peaceful march with inspirational messages and music. Come early for a national moment of silence at 8 a.m. sharp, followed by the opening ceremony and pule (prayer) with Lei’ohu Ryder.

If you heard about and wanted to go to the Women’s March on Washington but can’t make it, attend the Women’s March on Maui.

The people of Maui will join hundreds of thousands of women and others who plan to rally across the country and globe in peaceful solidarity with the Women’s March on Washington on Jan. 21.

The pro-women march aims to “send a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights,” according to the event’s official website.

For the first time ever, all of the marches will be linked at the same time in one bold, amazing moment for women’s equality.

At 1 p.m. Eastern time (8 a.m. Maui time), Gloria Steinem, well-known women’s advocate, will lead the countdown to a National Minute of Silence for Women’s Equality.

Proclaiming the importance of social and economic equality for all, the event will feature sign waving, inspirational music and messages, and registration for action teams.

“Come and speak out for the protection of our rights, for free speech, safety, and health for all our citizens,” Maui organizers noted.

“Walk in solidarity with women, men and children everywhere, to further the advancement of human rights for ourselves, our communities and our world!”

Coordinators and activists of the march here on Maui hope to use the event to develop alternative ways to create change in our own community and contribute to a greater movement from a local, everyday standpoint.

The march is sponsored by the Human Services Program and Malama Lahui Kanaka Club at UHMC.

Visit womensmarchmaui.com for ways to contribute and get involved.

Admission is free. Tax-deductible donations will be gratefully accepted for the Safe Keiki Project.

Bring a sign, chair, sunscreen, water, a musical instrument if you like and canned goods for Maui Food Bank.

Women’s March on Washington organizers, co-chaired by Steinem, expect around 200,000 attendees. Their national website, www.womensmarch.com, is a source of information and inspiration.
