Maui Prep spring sports teams continue climb in MIL

Maui Preparatory Academy track and field athletes turned in impressive performances this year.

NAPILI – Maui Preparatory Academy continued to climb over the 2013-14 school year, as the Pueo spring sports teams moved up in the Maui Interscholastic League standings with impressive performances in several events.

Freshman standout Adam Quandt qualified for the state tournament in boys golf with a 12th place finish in the MIL individual playoffs. The young Pueo roster – made up of four freshmen, one sophomore and one senior – returned to league play after a four-year hiatus and was coached by Jen Orchard. The team roster included Jonah Bluh, Zacariah Giles, Nicholas Head, Coleman Kingwell, Corey McMurray and Quandt.

In track and field, the Maui Prep team coached by Becky Hirsch and Dennis Nakamura excelled in the MIL Junior Varsity Championships, taking third place in the team standings.

Multi-sport student athlete Sophia Johnston won gold medals in the 1,500- and 3,000-meter events, and also took third in the high jump.

Teammates Alexa Narayan and Jessica Kingwell followed in second and third, respectively, in the 3,000-meter race, with Narayan also winning a silver medal in the high jump and a bronze in the 1,500. Jamie Advincula took third place in the 800-meter race.

In the varsity meet, Skyler Hirsch placed sixth in the high jump, and Advincula finished seventh in the 800. The Pueo track and field roster also included Lexie Leon, Joshua Ancheta, Nolan Lehman, Alexandra Mosley, Alexander Muto, Parker Robb and Sarah Wilhelm.

The tennis team was guided by coach Daniel Beeson and was led by Lillie Meyer’s eighth place MIL placing. The girls finished the season with a 4-4 record that was good for third place.

The combined roster included Leiana Beyer, Devon Bluh, Sebastian Buenrostro, Emily Anne Colbaugh, Sarah Anne Colbaugh, Ethan Frank, Evan Frederiksen, Elizabeth James, Jonathan Jerome, Lucas Mackin, Corey McMurray, Lillie Meyer, Daniel Ornelas, LeeEtta Jane Rhoades, Richard Sargent, Emma Scott, Sunvia Thangaraj and Te’a Vannetta.

The Maui Prep surf team finished fifth in the girls standings and seventh in the boys. The team was coached by Andrew O’Riordan.

Once again, multi-sport star Sophia Johnston led the way with a seventh place effort in the MIL competition to pace the Pueo. The team roster included Skyler Hirsch, Sebastian Buenrostro, Kieran Clark and Davis Pitzer.
