Public invited to presentation on Central Maui Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan

KAHULUI - The public is invited to a meeting for a presentation on Complete Streets and the Central Maui Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 5:30 p.m. at the Lihikai School Cafeteria.

The meeting will be hosted by Kahului County Councilman Don Guzman and the Maui County Nutrition and Physical Activity Coalition, in cooperation with the YMCA's Pioneering Healthier Communities project and county Department of Public Works.

Duo to discuss health of Maui reefs

MAALAEA - Pacific Whale Foundation's free Making Waves Lecture Series continues on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at its Discovery Center.

Sarah McLane of the Maui Nui Resource Council will speak about the Maui Coral Reef Recovery Plan, and John Fitzpatrick of the University of Hawaii Maui College will give a presentation about his research utilizing citizen science and Go Pro cameras to evaluate coral reef health at Olowalu.

Lions holding online scholarship fundraiser

LAHAINA - West Maui Lions will hold their first Online Auction Scholarship Fundraiser on Biddingforgood.com, which will run from Oct. 25 through Nov. 22.

This is the club's fourth year raising money for graduates continuing to higher education.

Auction items from local organizations are being donated, including categories such as art, jewelry, hotel stays, fine dining and much more.

Baldwin High School to hold anniversary banquet

WAILUKU - H.P. Baldwin High School's 75th Anniversary Committee announced that a banquet to celebrate the school's milestone will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, at King Kamehameha Golf Club.

No-host cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m. The dinner and program begin at 6 p.m. The master of ceremonies for the event will be alumnus Jon Yoshimura. The event will feature a 75th Anniversary video done by BHS' Media and Video Production group and songs by Asian Blend.

Event to support A Keiki's Dream

WAILUKU - A Keiki's Dream Program invites families, clubs, businesses and kids of all ages to join its annual A Keiki's Walk on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Hui Aloha Playground at Keopuolani Park in Central Maui.

Preregistration begins at 7 a.m., and the walk starts at 8 a.m.

The simple one-mile walk through the park starts and ends at the playground by Kahului Beach Road below the soccer fields. Participants are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite Halloween costume, trick-or-treat at the Treat Stations set up along the course and enjoy the child-friendly activities at the Finish Area.

After the walk, there will be a costume contest, face painting, balloon animals, henna tattoos and other fun activities.

Each walker is asked to raise a minimum donation of $30 ($20 for children under 18).

Kahili Restaurant helping Hali'imaile Community Garden

WAIKAPU - Kahili Restaurant is helping to bring awareness to hunger, organic gardening, sustainability, healthy eating, and methods of producing and preparing abundant food on Maui through a benefit night fundraiser in partnership with Hali'imaile Community Garden.

The Oct. 19 event will take place during dinner service at Kahili Restaurant, 2500 Honoapiilani Highway. Kahili Restaurant will donate a portion of sales during the event to Hali'imaile Community Garden to help to raise funds for the garden's programs. For information,

Tickets on sale for Hula O Na Keiki

KAANAPALI - The 23rd annual Hula O Na Keiki, Maui's only children's hula competition, is set for Nov. 8-10 at Kaanapali Beach Hotel.

This weekend competition will commemorate one of Hawaii's richest traditions.

Children ages 5-17 compete as soloists and as boy and girl pairs. The competition includes a judge's interview and their hula performances in both kahiko (ancient) and auana (modern) dance categories. The students are judged on their proficiency of the Hawaiian language and the appropriateness of their costume.

Open to hula students from around the world, this year's participants include halau from Japan, California, Maui and Oahu.

To complement the keiki hula competition, weekend festivities at the hotel include arts and crafts from all islands, cultural and hula workshops and Hawaiian entertainment.

Tickets are now available at Kaanapali Beach Hotel's Ohana Fun Center; call 667-0129. The Hawaiian Festival of Arts and Crafts runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The doors for the competition open Friday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. Sunday features an award-winning Sunday Champagne Brunch.
