COMMUNITY NEWS for June 6 issue

By Staff | Jun 6, 2013

The featured artist at Lahaina Arts Society in June is Shirley Hartley, who was recently named a “Living Treasure” of LAS. She has been painting for about 15 years and has sold over 300 paintings. She uses oils and loves the texture that can be produced with palette knives. The whole of Maui (and the world) is her subject matter. Seascapes, landscapes, surfers, sunsets and just about anything that catches your eye is subject for her paintings. There are 23 new paintings in this exhibit, including several of her favorite, “Secret Beach.” Her ongoing theme has been “Island Memories.” For more information, phone the gallery at 661-0111.

Cat spay/neuter clinic slated in West Maui

LAHAINA – The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will bring its team of spay/neuter volunteers to Lahaina for West Maui’s first-ever mass spay/neuter clinic for cats on Sunday, June 9.

SPCA Maui is partnering with Veterinarian Dr. Susan Baillie and West Maui Pet Supply for the clinic, the first in a new, ongoing series targeting both owned, community and feral cats.

Clients are asked to “pay what they can,” said clinic coordinator and SPCAM President Sue Liscombe. “Space is limited, so call and book a space today.

“Humane traps are available to lend free of charge, too” added Liscombe.

Zenshin Daiko’s 14th annual Taiko Festival will be held on Saturday, June 8, at 7 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater. The concert will open with Taiko Center of the Pacific Youth Group (above), the children’s group of world-renowned taiko drummer Kenny Endo’s school of taiko on Oahu. The second half of the evening features Maui’s Zenshin Daiko, which will premiere two exciting pieces. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids 12 years and under; call 242-SHOW.

SPCA Maui will conduct similar clinics in Wailuku on June 16 and 23.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is an all-volunteer, not for profit, 501(c)(3) dedicated to a “No More Homeless Pets Maui” and the ending of killing as a means of companion animal population control.
