LETTERS for the Nov. 17 issue
Inequality is a serious issue
I am Jazyen Tumamao, a student at Lahainaluna High School. I am writing to you today because I want to talk about our “generation inequality” that is happening globally.
Events that are currently happening regarding this issue include that some people are not being treated fairly. For example, in the restaurants, supermarkets, parks and many more. Some people are being treated unfairly because of lack of money or the way that they dress, while some people are being treated highly because of their money and good connections.
I am concerned about this issue, because I want everyone to be comfortable without worrying that they are being judged and being discriminated against. This issue is important, because people who are affected by this issue suffer mentally and physically. Some effects of inequality are mental illness, social anxiety, not being able to focus on learning in school, and poor social interaction in the community. I want to address this topic, because I want everyone to be treated equally and respectfully. I want inequality to be reduced and stopped.
Please consider helping me to take an action about our “generation equality.” Thank you very much for your time reading this letter. It would be such an honor if you help me spread awareness about the topic I am concerned about.

Olowalu Fire Station campaign launched
The West Maui Improvement Foundation Inc. (WMIF) is pleased to announce that the community has come together with aloha for improved health and safety for our community once again. It’s a “HANA HOU!” The “one more time” for a community-public private partnership to save lives and property.
There is no question that the miracle of a community developing its second fire station is officially underway. The West Maui community has spoken with their wallets and personal attendance in support of the WMIF Olowalu Fire Station.
The Olowalu Brunch by the Sea Fundraiser was sold out and attended by Mayor Michael Victorino, Fire Chief Bradford Ventura, and Olowalu Homes Inc. Land Donor/President Peter Martin, who enthusiastically endorsed the WMIF Olowalu Fire Station project.
They say it “takes a village.” We seem to have that village of support. The second major fundraiser is set for January 7, 2023, at the Hyatt Regency Maui. Please join us for a lovely evening gala with ocean views at the Halona Kai, featuring a three-course dinner, spectacular entertainment by Gretchen Rhodes and The House Shakers, dancing, and silent and live auctions. We expect another sell out, so buy your tickets today! It’s a great holiday gift!
The main objective at this time is to raise the $2 million to make this Olowalu Fire Station a reality. Brunch and dinner tickets and silent auctions are great, but the real money necessary for the success of this project has to be found in dedicated tax-deductible financial donations invested by the West Maui community. Certainly, the property owners residing within five miles of the Olowalu Station have an incredible investment opportunity, as they will be able to recoup their investment in full by way of reduced property insurance costs when the fire station has been opened and operational for six months.
The WMIF is initiating a mailing to all property owners within five miles of the proposed Olowalu Fire Station to be a part of this miracle in progress and to step up to the challenge with their best financial contribution as soon as possible. Time is of the essence, as lives and property are literally at risk until we make this a reality.

Please accept our gratitude for your continued support!

New governor will offer interesting politics
While the outcome from here in the race for governor is very disappointing, it will make for interesting politics for a man who projects himself as something he is not.

Some things we won’t be thankful for on Thanksgiving
What are the things we will be least grateful for this Thanksgiving?
Massive weekend advertisements for sports betting, so we can lose our Christmas money?
The advent of political home invasions, so we can rub out opponents without having to beat them in elections?
Lawyers who get paid handsomely for rejecting every kind of law, even when their cases are thrown out of court?
Triple digit pay-day interest rates, so we can send the working poor back to Biblical debt slavery?
Universities standing around while the republic disappears into a sink hole, all the while admiring themselves in the mirror and investing in football stadiums and coaching salaries?
Churches standing pat on science fiction while the rest of the world advances based on real science?
A very stable genius running again, so we can gorge on the pornography of political self-mutilation?
