Community loses Sallie Zaugg

Sallie Zaugg will be remembered for her feisty spirit, sense of humor, loyalty to friends, and as a loving mother.
The wave of young adults that came to Maui in the 1970s to staff the blossoming visitor industry of the time was a vibrant and energetic group that would come to define the colorful personality of the West Side.
Marilyn Sallie Zaugg was one of them. Born in the Canal Zone, Panama, Sallie was raised in Southern California and attended Whittier College before moving to Maui in 1974 and earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Hawaii, Maui Campus.
Sallie became an icon of the fun-loving, yet focused and responsible, restaurant scene of Kaanapali and Kapalua. She worked at Rusty Harpoon, Le Tournados, Spats, Pineapple Hill, and the Kapalua Bay Club — all five-star establishments that came to define the quality of the local tourist industry.
She met the love of her life, Jeff “Hulk” Zaugg, who worked at another of the defining restaurants of the time — the Chart House Lahaina. They were married in 1979 and made their homes at pristine locales at Kahana Cove, Napilihau, Kula and finally Kihei.
They had a son, Zachery, who grew up on Maui and graduated from King Kekaulike High School in 2004.
After decades in the restaurant industry, Sallie and Hulk transitioned their careers into real estate and mortgage loans, with Sallie working for Island Sotheby’s Wailea.
Sadly, Hulk passed away unexpectedly from surgical complications in 2014, and Sallie began a battle with cancer. She lost the battle with the insidious disease and passed away one day after her 75th birthday on March 26, 2023. She chose to spend her last days at home with the support of Hospice Maui and the loving care of her family and friends.
She now rests in eternal peace with her dear Hulk in the Lord’s Kingdom above.
A celebration of life was held at Airport Beach at Kaanapali on Sunday, April 16. Longtime friends and family gathered to bid aloha to Sallie with bagpipes and rose petals at the shoreline.
She is survived by her only son, Zachery Zaugg; sister Nancy Cross (Bill); nieces Candace Cross Lanier (Chris) and Kendall Cross Grant (Tim); and grandnieces Scarlet and Lucy Lanier.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Hospice Maui, as the loving care, patient support and respect they provided to Sallie and her family was immeasurable and greatly appreciated.
