Mary Helen Lindsey leaves a strong legacy of service

By BY WALTER CHIHARA - | Feb 3, 2023

Funeral services for Mary Helen Lindsey were held at Keopuolani Hall at Waiola Church in Lahaina on Sunday Jan. 22, 2023.

There are few more vital contributors to the integrity of the Lahaina community than Mary Helen “Kehaulani” Lindsey, who passed peacefully away on Jan. 13. Born on March 16, 1941, she was 81 years old.

Mary Helen followed her mother, Rose Pua Wright Lindsey, as the dorm matron at Lahainaluna High School’s student Boarding Department. The program nurtured teenagers in the unique work/study program into independent young adults. The Lindseys played a vital role in the success of generations of Maui’s population through this endeavor.

And along with George Paoa, Mary Helen Lindsey became a leading contributor to the development of the culture of the Hawaiian canoe, particularly for the youth of the West Side. She worked alongside Paoa to establish and promote Lahaina Canoe Club and the Lahainaluna High School paddling team for the decades leading up to and through the turn of the century.

She was born to “Ned” Edwin Robert Naleilehua Lindsey Sr. and “Pua” Rose Pua Wright Lindsey. She has five siblings: Roselle F.K. Bailey (James M.); Edwin Robert Naleilehua Lindsey Jr. (Puanani); Charles Robert Lindsey (Elna); Leonard C.K. Lindsey; and Rose Marie Lindsey Duey (John).

Mary Helen Lindsey was pre-deceased by Edwin R.N. Lindsey Jr. and Leonard C.K. Lindsey.

Mahalo nui to all who have supported, uplifted, loved, cared for, thought of, and prayed for Mary Helen from the Lindsey ohana.
