Support Lions Recycle for Sight

By Staff | Jan 20, 2023

Do you have any old eyeglasses sitting in your dresser drawers or closets? They could change the lives of needy people living in developing countries.

It’s time again for the 14th annual “Lions in Sight” Statewide Eyeglass & Hearing Aid Collection.

Maui residents can bring their used eyeglasses and hearing aids and donate them to the Lions Recycle For Sight program on Saturday, Jan. 21, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Walmart at 101 Pakaula St. in Kahului.

The glasses will be cleaned, categorized by prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions, Leos and other groups.

According to the World Health Organization, the eyesight of approximately one-fourth of the world’s population can be improved through the use of a corrective lens.

The glasses will be distributed to those in need within developing countries, where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible. In countries such as Afghanistan, Samoa and the Philippines, an eye exam can cost as much as one month’s wages, and a single eye doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people.

In addition to eyeglasses, hearing aids will be also collected, cleaned and tested for local distribution.

Hawaii Lions collect eyeglasses year-round. Visit hawaiilions.org for the locations of specially marked Lions Recycle For Sight collection boxes.

With clubs in West Maui and around the world, Lions are known for their commitment to being “Knights of the Blind in the Crusade against Darkness,” an inspiring statement made by Helen Keller in 1925.

Your old glasses can help someone see better. “Imagine if you could help a child read. An adult succeed in his job. A senior maintain his or her independence,” Hawaii Lions explained.
