West Maui Greenway Plan is ready

By Staff | Nov 12, 2022

After a year-long community engagement and research process, the Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization has completed the West Maui Greenway Plan.

Created in coordination with county parks, planning, transportation, housing and public works experts, the plan is available for review at mauimpo.org.

According to Maui MPO, community supporters of the greenway were instrumental in getting the plan completed. The plan represents a big step toward the project they have advocated for almost a decade.

“The greenway is for everyone — people who want to safely commute, exercise, get in touch with nature and feel better being outdoors,” said Saman Dias, chairperson of the Maui Bicycling League and the West Maui Greenway Alliance. “Mahalo to Maui MPO, the County of Maui and community advocates for moving this project forward.”

The West Maui Greenway Plan is a vision for a future greenway extending 25 miles and consisting of a multi-use trail from Ukumehame to Lipoa Point. The greenway aims to provide safe, comfortable and welcoming recreation and transportation opportunities while highlighting the diverse history, landscape and culture of the region.

The West Maui Greenway Plan features the following components:

Historical context of the planning efforts, and alignment with existing projects in West Maui;

Identifying six segments of the greenway with route alternatives based on site inspection and community feedback;

Priorities on safety, purposeful and inclusive design, maintenance and resiliency plan, which were collected from community engagement efforts;

Proposed landscape and aesthetic design that incorporates wayfinding signage;

Options for future management and maintenance;

Potential funding sources to take the plan from paper to implementation.

“Congratulations to all the stakeholders of the West Maui Greenway project and thanks to Maui MPO for demonstrating what collaboration between the county and the community can accomplish,” said Yuki Lei Sugimura, chair of Maui MPO’s Policy Board. “I invite the community to review the plan and keep it top of mind for future updates.”
