Comment on Maui transportation projects

By Staff | May 26, 2022

The Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is now accepting public comments on its Federal Fiscal Year 2022-2025 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) Revision #5.

The TIP includes all transportation projects on Maui that use federal highway or transit money, or are regionally significant. By identifying projects in the Transportation Improvement Program, Maui can receive funding for roads, bridges, bus transit, trails, paths and sidewalks.

West Maui projects charted in the TIP include, in Federal Fiscal Year 2024, developing and constructing shoreline protection measures to better protect roadways from flooding and erosion as identified and prioritized in the Statewide Shoreline Protection Program near Ukumehame and Puamana Beach Park ($7,000,000 estimated total project cost), developing a feasible two-lane alternative route mauka of Honoapiilani Highway outside of coastal hazard area and projected sea-level rise impact area from the vicinity of Ukumehame to the vicinity of Olowalu ($90,000,000 estimated total project cost), and extensive rehabilitation projects to Lahainaluna Road and Lower Honoapiilani Road from Honoapiilani Highway to Hoohui Road.

One project that is being removed is Lahaina Bypass Phase 1C, from Keawe Street to north of the Kaanapali Connector, due to re-prioritization of limited rental car surcharge funds.

A public review draft is available on mauimpo.org through June 2.

The TIP is full of important and needed Maui projects. Send comments by e-mail to lauren@mauimpo.org or by mail to Maui MPO at 200 South High St., Wailuku, HI 96793.
