Help clean up Honolua Bay
When residents were asked about issues and challenges during the creation of the Honolua to Honokohau Management Plan, trash was near the top of the list.
Sadly, the remote Upper West Side has been an active dumping ground for decades.
In the future, the state plan should improve management of this beautiful area from Honolua north to Honokohau. Until then, it will be up to volunteers like Les Potts, bay surfers and the Save Honolua Coalition to hold workdays to haul out rubbish.
Organized by Potts, DoomaPhotos, Down The Hatch, Breakwall Shave Ice Co., Honolua Surf Co., Mala Ocean Tavern, Save Honolua Coalition, The Coffee Store Napili, Jucker Boards and others, the next cleanup at Honolua Bay is set for Saturday, Jan. 15.
Volunteers will pick up rubbish around Honolua Bay from Mile Marker 32-36. Simply register at the Honolua Bay Lookout — look for the Down The Hatch tent — and they’ll send you out to an area that needs attention.
All ages are welcome — drop in anytime between 8 and 10:30 a.m. to volunteer. Bring closed-toe shoes, a face mask, work gloves, water bottle and a positive attitude!
Trash bags will be provided for volunteers cleaning up around the bay.
And if you’re busy during Saturday’s event, consider contributing to the Save Honolua Coalition’s Go Fund Me account. The organization is raising money to pay for dumpsters to remove rubbish and scrap metal from the Honolua Bay area.
