County boards need volunteers

By Staff | Oct 1, 2021

Want to get involved in Maui County government without having to run for office?

Volunteers play an important role in our local government by serving on Maui County boards and commissions.

Right now, the County of Maui seeks applicants to fill multiple vacancies on county boards, commissions, councils and committees.

The Affirmative Action Advisory Council; Civil Service Commission; Maui County Cultural Resources Commission; Real Property Tax Review Board; and Salary Commission all need one new member.

There are two openings on each of the following: Animal Control Board; Board of Ethics; Board of Variances and Appeals; Board of Water Supply; Fire & Public Safety Commission; Hana Advisory Committee to the Maui Planning Commission; Liquor Control Adjudication Board; Liquor Control Commission; Maui Planning Commission; Molokai Planning Commission; Paia-Haiku Advisory Committee to the Maui Planning Commission; Police Commission; Public Works Commission; South Maui Advisory Committee to the Maui Planning Commission; Kula Agricultural Park Committee; Urban Design Review Board; Commission on Healing Solutions for Homelessness; Maui County Arborist Committee; and Maui Redevelopment Agency.

Three new members are needed on the Commission on Children and Youth; Council on Aging; Lanai Planning Commission; Maui County Persons with Disabilities Commission; Conservation Planning Committee; and Committee on the Status of Women, and there are four openings on the Urban Design Review Board.

Responsibilities for all boards, commissions, councils and committees include regular meeting attendance, considering public testimony and reviewing policies and standards.

All meetings are held virtually using the BlueJeans online meeting platform, so you don’t have to leave home.

The mayor nominates appointees to all positions, and the Maui County Council later confirms them. Terms of service vary from two to five years.

No monetary compensation is provided for serving on a board or commission, but volunteers are reimbursed for approved travel expenses.

Applications are kept on file for at least two years, and any applicant may be considered for nomination whenever a position opens. Openings occur when terms expire or upon resignation of a board, commission, committee or council member.

Nominees are selected based upon the applicant’s experience and interests.

Those interested in serving on a board or commission should apply online at www.mauicounty.gov/Boards. The application deadline is Nov. 15, 2021.
