Cheyene Trecita Kaina personified the warmth of the West Side

Cheyenne Trecita Kaina (in yellow) became a familiar fixture at Ace Hardware in Lahaina for almost four decades, as her friendly nature gave happiness to customers and co-workers there.

Beloved Lahaina resident Cheyenne Trecita Kaina passed away with loved ones by her side on Aug. 9, 2021. Born and raised and living most of her life in Lahaina, she manifested the warm and kindly nature of the West Side. She was 65.

She became a familiar fixture at Ace Hardware in Lahaina for almost four decades, as her friendly nature gave happiness to customers and co-workers there.

She especially relished ohana time as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend.

Cheyenne is survived by her husband, Albert Kaina; sons Shane (Jessica) Basques and John (Tracy) Balisco; daughter, Kawailehua Balisco; sisters Verna Biga and Phyllis (Don) Rosenthal; brother Daniel (Joanne) Basques; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her brother, Kincaid Kupahu Sr., and sister, Ryces Bilan.

A drive-through celebration of life was held on Sept. 11 at Wahikuli Wayside Park. A public walkthrough celebration was also held that day.

“I can tell you that family meant everything to her,” said brother-in-law Don Rosenthal. “She was cherished and admired by the Lahaina community, and especially by her co-workers and customers at Ace Hardware. We will all miss her wonderful spirit.” (By Walter Chihara)
