Our Kupuna needs volunteers
Recognizing a need in West Maui and across the state due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Our Kupuna program connects sponsors with seniors.
Our Kupuna is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that links Hawaii residents ages 60 and up with sponsors who are able to deliver groceries, medication and other necessary supplies, so that kupuna can stay home.
This statewide delivery service for kupuna 60 and older seeks volunteers in Lahaina, Kihei, Makawao and Wailuku.
Those interested in volunteering can visit ourkupuna.com. Volunteers must first pass a background screening.
Sponsors call their designated kupuna once a week to see if any deliveries are needed. Kupuna are responsible for reimbursing their sponsor for expenses incurred.
Since the program’s launch in March, about 400 kupuna have signed up for the free service, including Maui resident Jamila Janco.
“I can’t wait to meet [my volunteer] in person and give her a hug,” said Janco.
“She is so helpful and calls me every week, and has been wonderful in getting my items. She is an absolute delight.”
