Rotarians helping keiki at remote Hana School

By Staff | Jul 19, 2018

According to Joanne Laird, past president of the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset, “The children out at Hana School are often forgotten when community service organizations host school supplies drives.”

Recognizing the need, club members “are committed to assisting the children of this underserved school and community,” she added.

The club will hold a School Supplies Drive for the children at Hana Elementary School at the entrance of Lahaina Cannery Mall next to Longs Drugs on Saturday, Aug. 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In 2017, club members collected $500 in funds and eight boxes of school supplies for Hana School.

“We are hoping that our community will continue to help out the children in Hana, who often can’t easily acquire their needed school supplies,” Laird said.

In a similar effort, the Kiwanis Club of the Valley Isle will accept donations for MEO Head Start children entering kindergarten in less than a month.

Emphasizing that even a $1 contribution helps, donations for Project Backpack-Equipped to Learn can be dropped off at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center from 5 to 9 p.m. on July 20 and 27, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on July 21 and 28, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 22 and 29.

School supplies sought include blunt scissors, eight- and 24-count crayon boxes, four-ounce white glue bottles, boxes of #2 pencils, broad tip markers and large plastic school boxes.

Donate to these two campaigns to help equip children for learning when the 2018-19 school year opens soon.
