The Salvation Army Lahaina Lighthouse Corps organized and hosted its third annual Health Fair on Thursday, Sept. 21. The Project Vision Hawaii Van, Ohana Health Care, Mental Health Kokua, Women Helping Women, Helping Hands Hawaii and Hospice Maui participated in the fair. With more than 75 people in attendance, the event featured free vision screenings and professionals present for discussions on health, wellness and nutrition. Kupuna in the community — such as Aunty Lovey Yoshimoto — said they appreciated the convenience of the fair, and they look forward to next year’s event. LHS Class of 1987 planning 30th Reunion

LAHAINA – The Lahainaluna High School Class of 1987 is celebrating its 30th Reunion on Friday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Maui Grill in Kaanapali. There will be pupus and a no-host bar.

On Saturday, Oct. 21, the class will attend Lahainaluna’s Homecoming Game vs. Kamehameha Maui at Sue D. Cooley Stadium.

Lahaina Liquor Control Office closed on Oct. 12

WAILUKU – The Lahaina Liquor Control Office will be closed on Thursday, Oct. 12, due to staff training.

Certification exams that usually take place at the Lahaina office on Thursdays will not be available. Maui exams will still be available through the Wailuku Office at the David Trask Building on Kaohu Street on Tuesdays and Fridays. State proposes to increase commercial marine license fees

HONOLULU – The state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) has scheduled statewide public hearings on proposed administrative rule amendments that would increase the annual commercial marine license fees from the current $50/year to $100/year initially, then to $150/year on Jan. 1, 2018.

This date may be delayed until later in the year, depending on when the rules are approved. The proposed rules also would establish a reporting deadline for dealers who buy marine life directly from commercial fishers.

The Maui hearing will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 4, in the Maui Waena School Cafeteria at 795 Onehee St. in Kahului from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Domestic violence vigil set

KAHULUI – In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, the Central Maui Domestic Violence Task Force will hold “Remember my name,” a community candlelight vigil, on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the University of Hawaii Maui College.

Sign waving to help raise awareness will be held from 4:30 to 5 p.m. on Kaahumanu Avenue. Bring your own sign or use one provided.

From 5:15 to 7 p.m., the vigil will be held on the UHMC Great Lawn to honor the lives lost from domestic violence. Representatives from Women Helping Women, Parents and Children Together, Child and Family Service, Maui Police Department and other supportive agencies will participate.

Maui Mauka Conservation Awareness Training slated

KIHEI – Maui Mauka Conservation Awareness Training events will be held in Kihei on Oct. 18 from noon to 3 p.m. and in Kahului on Oct. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Environmental interpretation plays a significant role in nature-based tourism and is beneficial to tour operators, visitors, conservation groups and the nature-based tourism economy.

The goal of this training is to educate tour operators and guides about native ecosystems and species found in Hawaii and the projects that are helping to conserve them.

Presentations about conservation and the natural environment are given by representatives from the Maui Invasive Species Committee, East Maui Watershed Partnership, and Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project.
