Moms and newborns enjoy magical experience
Here’s a good one for everybody…
Our daughter and granddaughter take part in an exercise program called “Stroller Strides Fit 4 Mom Maui” led by Shellsea Gruber that takes mothers and their newborns through weekly power walks and circuit training regimens along the pristine coastline at Wahikuli Wayside Park.
One day recently, as the mommas and their keiki stopped their jog/stroll along the immaculate-kept walkway and began doing circuit exercises on the park lawn, one of the group noticed a big splash and a smaller one next to it about 100 yards offshore. Then the mother whale and its newborn calf did it again, and again, and again.
The awestruck group of human moms cheered, leaped for joy and continued their circuit exercises on the grass in conjunction with their companions in the ocean.
After our daughter related this sweet occurrence to me, I began to wonder about who was influencing whom in this magical encounter. Did the momma whale see the Stroller Strides moms exercising on the shoreline, or did the ladies on the grass learn from the whale how to nurture their babies?
Seems to me that it was simply the good vibrations of the universe that we enjoy here on Maui coming to the surface – the convergence of the natural goodness factors in this life that we are blessed enough to experience.
One thing we can be certain of is that this shoreline from the Hyatt down to Front Street at the old Chart House location has been beautifully manicured by the West Maui Parks and Recreation crew led by Supervisor Eddie Curimao and staff Anthony Acain and William Acain.
Every day, locals, visitors, young, old and in between enjoy this jewel of our community with scenic walks, picnics and parties, and romantic sunset moments.
It brings together all the facets of the good life and the blessings we share in our lives here. It reminds me of the Hawaiian philosophy that I so admire and so aspire to promote: Malama Pono – to nurture in a motherly way that which is good and righteous.
