Get rid of ‘E-waste’ responsibly

By Staff | Jan 1, 2015

Many tech-savvy households over the years have accumulated closets full of old TVs, VCRs and other now “obsolete” electronics.

Want to get rid of it all and help a worthy Maui charity in the process?

5A Rent-A-Space in Honokowai, assisted by Maui County Electronics Recycling and Habitat For Humanity, will hold an Electronic E-Cycling event on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 7 to 11 a.m. in 5A’s parking lot at 3600 Lower Honoapiilani Road.

At this rare event on the West Side, electronic waste equipment will be collected and delivered it to Habitat for Humanity’s Re-Store Warehouse in Wailuku for refurbishment or recycling.

5A invites residents to: “Join us as we work to keep our island home clean and green.”

The following items will be accepted: TVs, keyboards, laptops, computers, PDAs, MP3 players, CRT and LCD monitors, printers, scanners, DVD and VCR players, telephones and cell phones, fax machines, stereos and speakers, video and digital cameras, microwave ovens, and household and power tool batteries. No appliances, auto or marine batteries or hazardous waste will be accepted.

Recyclables include items with electronic circuit boards and everything that attaches to them, as well as audio, phone and most office equipment.

Useable equipment will be donated to Habitat families, schools or non-profits. Items that are not useable or re-sellable will be shipped to the Mainland for recycling.

Items may be dropped off at 3600 Lower Honoapiilani Road between 7 and 11 a.m. on Jan. 24. For more information, contact Liz May at 669-5200 or Liz May liz5a@aol.com.

Get rid of your old electronics that are collecting dust. A Maui nonprofit may be happy to put them to use.
