Welcome the Hokule‘a to Lahaina on Sunday
Lahaina can be proud that Hokule?a’s first unofficial stop on its World Wide Journey is our historic town.
The celebrated voyaging canoe, a global symbol of hope, is slated to arrive in Lahaina Harbor on Sunday, May 18, between 7 and 7:30 a.m. Ke?eaumoku Kapu will lead the arrival protocol.
Hui o Wa?a Kaulua at Kamehameha Iki Park (next to 505 Front Street) will host a community pot luck lunch for the crew at noon.
The public is invited to bring a dish and have lunch with the Hokule?a crew.
Her crew members include the hui’s Kala Baybayan, a Polynesian Voyaging Society-trained navigator for Mo?okiha o Pi?ilani, Lahaina’s voyaging canoe under construction at the park.
Baybayan will sail the first leg (to the South Pacific) on Hokule?a’s World Wide Voyage.
Sacred Hearts School is on-board with Hokule?a’s historic voyage. Its vision holds that Earth is an island like Hawaii, and we must take better care of both.
Pinky Thompson and his son, Nainoa, a master navigator for Hokule’a, realized that ancient knowledge and values enabled Hawaiians to care for Hawaii and her seas for nearly 2,000 years through the careful management of natural resources. This insight must be shared with the world, they reasoned.
Polynesian Voyaging Society will sail Hokule’a around the world to share her values and practices for caring for our islands, learn from others what they are doing, and help navigate the planet toward a sustainable future.
