Lahaina Wrestling Club helps Luna athletes
The Lahaina Wrestling Club is dedicated to developing Lahainaluna High School athletes, with the ultimate goal of state team titles in both the boys and girls divisions.
Last summer, through the club’s support, 16 Luna wrestlers traveled to the elite Owen’s Team Camp in Spokane, Washington, and the Excel Team Camp at Estes Park, Colorado.
The club also welcomed an all-star team from the hotbed of wrestling in the Midwest and the State of Nebraska.
Luna wrestlers learned from a legend in the sport – Kearney High School Coach Tom McCann, who was named the “National Coach of the Year” in 2005 – and hit the mats near the ocean at Kaanapali Beach Hotel.
This specialized training will certainly help the Lahainaluna teams, as the boys compete for their eighth straight Maui Interscholastic League title, and the girls team shoots for its fourth consecutive championship.
All of the hard work is building up to the 2013 Chevron State Wrestling Championships on March 1-2 in Honolulu.
“We went to two camps on the Mainland this past summer, and we got everybody on our team believing that we can win the state championship,” Lahainaluna Coach Todd Hayase recently told the Lahaina News.
“We all must understand the hard work and commitment that is required to reach that goal. We definitely have the roster that can win it all.”
To support the Lahaina Wrestling Club and its efforts, Lahaina Hongwanji Mission will hold an Ono Huli Chicken Fundraiser on Monday, Feb. 18.
The price is a $7 donation. Pickup will be held at First Hawaiian Bank along Papalaua Street from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
