Get to know the candidates

By Staff | Oct 11, 2012

The Nov. 6 General Election is fast approaching. Are you ready to vote on the candidates and proposed Maui County Charter amendments?

To meet and learn more about the candidates, head to the West Maui Taxpayers Association’s “Candidates’ Night 2012” at Lahaina Civic Center on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 5 p.m.

Free and open to the public, this will be the only West Side political forum this election season. All candidates appearing on the West Maui ballot have been invited to participate.

Free food service starts at 5 p.m., with dinner provided by Arturo Ortiz and Dave Mello of Paradise Grill and Roundtable Pizza. For information, call 661-7990.

The proposed Maui County Charter amendments (see this week’s back cover) include a real stinker – a proposal to change County Council terms from two to four years – and some good ideas, including increasing council candidates’ residency requirements from 90 days to a full year.

Maui County Councilman and Policy Committee Chair G. Riki Hokama, the Maui County Committee on the Status of Women and Maui Economic Opportunity Inc. invite the public to learn more about the charter amendments at a one-hour workshop at the MEO Family Center in Wailuku on Thursday, Oct. 18, from 11 a.m. to noon.

“Please join us and gain valuable insight to help you make an informed decision on Election Day,” noted Debbie Cabebe of MEO, “and don’t forget to vote!”

Attendees should bring a brown-bag lunch. Bottled water will be provided. Register by Oct. 15 by e-mailing debbie.cabebe@meoinc.org or 249-2990.

This election is important for West Maui’s future. Get to know the candidates and vote on Nov. 6.
