Lions to raise awareness via ‘Seven Days of Service’
According to West Maui Lions Secretary Linda Elms, “Every month, Hawaii Lions from all over the state contribute thousands of hours of community service to the people of Hawaii.
“Like many good things in life, they frequently garner little notice and are largely taken for granted.”
West Maui Lions hope to draw the public’s attention to the many service projects performed by Hawaii members through “Lions SOS – Seven Days of Service” from Sept. 30 to Oct. 6.
Next week Saturday, Oct. 6, West Maui Lions will hold an Adopt-A-Highway cleanup at 7 a.m. at Mile Marker 18-20. Coffee and donuts will be available for the crew prior to the walk, along with cold water following the project.
Anyone interested in helping should show up with gloves. The club will provide volunteers with an Adopt-A-Highway T-shirt, safety vest and bag.
Lions Clubs of Maui will also hold a White Cane Awareness Day and Walk For Sight on Sunday, Oct. 7, at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center in Kahului at 7:30 a.m.
Lions here formed “to meet the needs of West Maui by providing services that directly benefit our local community. We are committed to raising awareness of blindness, hearing and diabetes and their prevention.”
Members recently collected slippers for Maui County students entering the new school year, and Lions each year gather old and unused glasses to send to poor people around the world, who are delighted to receive them.
The president of West Maui Lions for 2012-13 is Donald Young. Anyone interested in joining may attend a monthly meeting on the fourth Tuesday of the month at Lulu’s at Lahaina Cannery Mall. For information, call Elms at 276-1191.
