Want to contribute to county government? You don’t have to run for office.

Mayor Alan Arakawa recently launched the annual recruitment drive for Maui County’s boards, commissions and advisory panels.

There are key positions for county citizens to fill, including seats on the Board of Ethics, Board of Water Supply, Cost of Government Commission, Cultural Resources Commission, Fire and Safety Commission, Liquor Control Commission, Maui Planning Commission and Police Commission

In these voluntary positions, county citizens hear public testimony, assess policies and standards and make recommendations to decision-makers.

Members of boards and commissions help make decisions that affect the county, including the neighborhoods they live in. They also become part of the checks and balances of government.

Positions are appointed by the mayor, confirmed by the County Council and have terms lasting two to five years.

Although, there is no monetary compensation associated with serving on a board or commission, your participation will provide for a better form of government.

If you are interested in serving, applications are available online at www.mauicounty.gov. Applications must be mailed by Dec. 31.
