Are slobs turning your neighborhood or favorite beach into a trash can? Take action on Saturday during “Get the Drift and Bag It.”

Community Work Day Program’s annual cleanup is an opportunity for residents to unite in a global effort to remove litter and debris from our coastal environment.

Maui’s event will be coordinated in partnership with the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, volunteers will meet at four central locations: Kahekili Beach Park in Kaanapali (see related article on page 7), Waipuilani Park in Kihei, Hana Bay and Hoaloha Park near Kahului Harbor.

Additional projects are slated at Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina on Sunday, Sept. 18, and Baldwin Beach Park in Paia on Sunday, Oct. 16. All events are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Community Work Day encourages businesses and residents of Maui Nui to participate in “Get the Drift and Bag It” — or in any scheduled cleanup through Oct. 16 — by gathering their family and friends and adopting a site in their neighborhood. The nonprofit organization will provide the supplies for your project.

Last year’s “Get the Drift and Bag It” cleanup brought together more than 1,000 volunteers, who collected 13,200 pounds of litter and marine debris, 1,800 plastic bags, 2,150 recyclable beverage containers and 7,600 cigarette butts in Maui Nui alone.

During the past 25 years, the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup has become the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health. Nearly nine million volunteers from 152 countries and locations have cleaned 145 million pounds of trash from the shores of lakes, streams, rivers and the ocean on just one day each year.

It’s easy to volunteer. All cleanup supplies and data cards will be provided for volunteers Saturday. Water will be supplied; volunteers are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles and work gloves, as well as reusable bags or buckets for litter collection. CWD recommends carpooling, walking and bicycling to the event.
