Lahaina Restoration Foundation (LRF) seeks the community’s help in a project to preserve Lahaina’s most prominent landmark.

The foundation is raising money to support the recent renovation of the Pioneer Mill Company Smokestack, a reminder of the sugar industry that helped shape West Maui.

“The Pioneer Mill Company Smokestack is one of the last remnants of an industry that touched many families in Lahaina and surrounding West Maui towns,” noted foundation Special Project Manager Noelani Rickard in a recent letter.

“The smoke billowing from the stack represented the vitality of this community. As custodian for Lahaina’s historic gems, the Lahaina Restoration Foundation has recently restored the smokestack to its original splendor.”

Last year, LRF completely restored the 225-foot-high smokestack erected in 1928 and began a project to install an engraved brick walkway circling its base with bricks bought by the community.

The foundation also installed interpretive panels, developed a display of large mill equipment, lit the smokestack at night and installed landscaping and fencing.

To support this major, ongoing community undertaking, Lahaina Restoration Foundation is holding its second annual Online Auction.

The 501(c)(3) Hawaii nonprofit seeks donations of auction items and services to appeal to locals and people planning a trip to Maui.

LRF’s online auction will be held this month and marketed nationally. Contribute to a great cause and gain national exposure, as every donated item will be linked to the donor’s website.
