The Maui Chamber of Commerce’s West Side Committee reported that contributions to secure fireworks for the Fourth of July have been coming in slower this year.

As of last week, the volunteer panel was short $30,000 to pay for the fireworks show.

The deadline for making a transaction with the fireworks company has passed, but the committee has been granted a short extension.

Hard Rock Cafe Marketing Manager Jill Holley, who is leading the Lahaina fireworks fundraising campaign, said the annual display is in jeopardy.

Last year, the Independence Day crowds rivaled the number of revelers for Halloween. Some bars and restaurants called it their biggest night of business for 2010.

People from around Maui come to Lahaina to eat, shop and enjoy the only community Fourth of July celebration and fireworks show.

According to the committee, a decent-sized restaurant can expect a $15,000 to $20,000 revenue spike on the night the fireworks are held.

Workers also gain shifts, bigger paychecks and more tips.

So, businesses, think of a contribution to the fireworks show as an investment.

Credit Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Captain Jack’s, Cilantro, Cool Cat Cafe, David Paul’s Island Grill, Famous Dave’s, Hard Rock Cafe, Kimo’s, Kobe Japanese Steakhouse, Lahaina Grill, Longhi’s, Pioneer Inn and Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse for contributing to the fundraising effort in 2010 and this year.

Holley hopes to see new businesses step forward, as well as restaurants that have benefitted from the fireworks for many years.

“Our merchants need to understand that it takes all of us to achieve this goal,” she said.

“I would like to see some of the Lahaina businesses rethink making a donation. We need their help. The burden needs to be shared.”
