Help move West Maui toward sustainability

With all of Maui’s bountiful resources, why are we dangerously dependent on imported food and oil?
A new group, West Maui Sustainability, is considering ways the community can capitalize on resources, protect the environment and promote grassroots change.
“Our first meeting was held on Wednesday, April 7, in Napili. The small group who came together generated some great excitement and a good direction for the group, including increased production of local food, alternative energy, composting, protection of our reefs and education in the field of sustainability,” noted member Steve Phillips.
Action is needed to offset serious issues. No other state is as reliant on imported fossil fuels for electrical power, we import 80 to 90 percent of our food, and large-scale agriculture is fading away.
The good news is we enjoy strong, clean energy-producing resources, agriculture options are limitless and Maui is a small community capable of dramatic change.
Following in the footsteps of effective South Maui Sustainability (southmauisustainability.wordpress.com/) and other groups, West Maui Sustainability wants to get West Siders working toward solutions.
All are welcome to attend their next meeting on Monday, April 19, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the weFarm@Kapalua offices in Napili, directly across Honoapiilani Highway from Napili Plaza (going up the hill toward Maui Preparatory Academy, it is the first building on the right).

“Join us in uniting our intentions to move toward a more sustainable West Maui,” Phillips concluded.
