New features coming in macOS Sonoma

By BY GEORGE GORDON / Computer Guru - | Sep 27, 2023

Get ready for all the new, cool things in Sonoma coming out in October for the Mac computers.

Control-Click brings up Widgets that you can add to your home screen.

The Messages App now has a + plus button that when pressed allows you to see a list of apps so you can add features to your messages. You’ll see Camera, Photos, Stickers, Audio and Apple Cash.

The Location App displays a map showing your current location. If you move the red pin on the map to another spot, you can share the location of where you’re heading to with friends and then meet them there. The Check IT feature lets your friends check your progress as you’re traveling there, displaying the time you’ll arrive.

The Search feature is even better than before. You can search for a photo of yourself on the beach or drinking in a bar.

Stickers is something new. It’s sort of like emojis, only you get to create them. They will be included in the Emojis list. To see them, just slide to the left in the Emojis list. For instance, you can create Stickers from any of your photos.

Go to the Photo App and click on a photo. Now tap and hold on that photo — a small menu pops up. Just choose “Add Sticker.” And get this: you can choose from a live photo picture, make a Sticker out of it, and in Messages the Sticker will slide around. You can use these Stickers in the Notes App, too. If you receive an audio clip, it will also show the text down below.

iOS 17 for the iPhone is coming out, and there’s a ton of new features. One of the coolest features is “Contact Posters.” This is a photo of yourself that other people will see when they answer their iPhone.

Go into Settings, and at the top, click on your ID and choose Update your Name and Photo. There you can choose a name and a photo of yourself, and then have fun editing the photo with colorful backgrounds.

A new feature that you’ll find handy if you get a lot of spam calls is Text Displaying. After answering your call, quickly switch over to Voicemail, and instantly the text will appear on the screen. So, you’ll be able to see who is calling you and what they’re saying.

In Safari, you can tap on the Reader button at the top left and choose the “Listen to Page” button that will speak the text on that page.

In Maps, you can now download a map, and in Photos, if you click on a photo — say a slice of cake — it will tell you the kind of cake and give you the recipe for it.

In the News App, you now have crossword puzzles.
