Use tags to help find important documents

By BY GEORGE GORDON/Computer Guru - | Jun 30, 2023

Today, I’m going to make your life much easier. We’ll be able to find your documents and open them faster than watching paint dry.

Remember in one of my recent issues that you can color tag a file? By opening up the Finder and scrolling down to the bottom, you can see a variety of color dots called tags. My favorite color is blue, so I opened up the Finder, went into the document folder, right-clicked on a document, scrolled down to the tags and chose blue. I did that on all my documents.

Now, when I open up the Finder and scroll down to the tags, I just have to click on the blue tag, and all my documents appear. But get ready for the best part.

Most people, in order to see a document, have to click on Pages. When it’s opened, they then have to click on File and scroll down the list until they see their document, then click on it to open it up. Wow, I could have painted the house and then taken the dogs for a half hour walk. But I’m going to make this so easy for you! Ready?

Click on the Finder at the bottom and click on your color that you choose for all your documents. Sit back and watch all your documents miraculously appear. Okay, here is the best part. Click on one and hit the space bar. Can you believe it? The document opened up without you going through all the trouble of first opening up the Pages program. But wait… hit your right arrow key.

Double wow — that file opened up, too. Go ahead and knock yourself out — right-click away on your arrow key and watch the other documents open up. Now go celebrate and have a beer on me.

In a few months, a new operating system for the Mac will be coming out. It’s called Sonoma or Mac OS 14. So get ready for more whistles and bells.

On the Apple TV, the screen displays an aerial view of LA, and you can see it slowly move around and cars on the freeway traveling along. Well, the new Sonoma has a screen saver that does the same.

If you go into Settings, unlock your screen and choose something like a canyon with a river flowing through it, it starts to flow. There are also underwater seascapes that will blow you away.

If you click on the top far right, you’ll see the Notification Center where you have Widgets. With Sonoma, you can drag a Widget to the Home Screen. That’s cool. Now in Safari is a new feature called Profile. When you create a Profile, it’s like having a separate Safari opened at the same time. So, you can have two different Safaris opened at the same time.

But the best feature is having a special icon for your favorite website. You can create what is called a Web App. What you do is go to a favorite website like Facebook, then choose File, Add to Doc. Now, when you quit Safari, there will be an icon on the desktop for Facebook, and if you click on it, Facebook will open up without first going into Safari and then choosing Facebook. I like this idea of simplifying going to a site without first opening up Safari and typing it in.

There are some cool options when video conferencing. You can choose Reactions and have confetti falling on your face. If you place your hands in the shape of a heart, all of a sudden, red hearts flood the screen. That will blow you away. You’ll love this feature.

In the Settings, Display, you can change the text size for any app. So, more to come, and I’ll keep you up-to-date.
