Tips for adding attachments to documents

By BY GEORGE GORDON/Computer Guru - | May 5, 2023

Today I’ll show you many ways to attach a document or photo to an e-mail. I create most of my documents and Lahaina News articles in Pages. When I’m finished, I e-mail my articles to Mark, the editor of Lahaina News, and he looks it over and usually finds tons of spelling and grammar “mistakkkkkes.”

So, once I have my e-mail opened, I type in Mark’s e-mail address. Then I open up the Finder and scroll down to Documents. There I find my latest article and drag it over to the middle of the e-mail page. An icon appears, and it’s ready to send.

Another way is to open up the Finder, right-click on the document you want to send and choose Share, Mail then Okay. Mail opens up for you to type in the sender’s address, and an icon with the name of the file automatically appears on the page. Click on Send, and that’s it.

Well, it’s much easier to send the document while you’re in Pages. When you finish typing out your document, all you have to do is click on FILE on the top left, choose “Export to” and choose WORD, then “Send a copy” and choose MAIL. The Mail App opens up, and all you have to do is type in the sender’s name. It’s much faster and easier than the old ways.

Also in Pages, when you tap on SHARE at the top, a menu pops down and you can choose Collaborate. There you have options to choose who can see and edit the document.

What happens is when you send the document to a person, they can look at it and edit it. The changes they make will allow you to see them when you open the document again. I tried this with Mark, and we both decided not to use this feature.

I’ve been helping people who have bought a new iPhone or iPad and need to set it up and transfer over all their apps, e-mails, contacts, photos and music. Apple has been making it pretty easy to follow.

They have you place your new iPhone or iPad next to your old one. Make sure both are connected to the same network. Once both are turned on, they magically connect to each other and begin the transfer. If you run into a problem, then it’s a little more difficult and you have to manually transfer the data through iCloud, That’s where I can help you out.

Transferring data and programs from a MacBook laptop to a new one can also be a challenge, and most people aren’t familiar with the Migration App that can automatically do this for you. It took me a few times to figure it out before I was successful.

Probably the easiest way to transfer photos from an iPhone is to a Windows computer. Just plug the iPhone into a USB port on the back of a Windows computer. All you have to do is click on “My Computer,” and the iPhone will show up under Drive C. Clicking on it will display all the photos, and you can copy them over to a file on the Windows computer.

On the Mac with the iPhone connected is a somewhat hidden app called “Image Capture.” When you open it up, you’ll be able to transfer all the photos to your Mac’s hard drive.

There are tiny SS (“solid state”) plug-in drives that you can buy that will automatically copy your photos onto the drive. They connect to the lighting port on the iPhone.

Many people also use iCloud storage or Google to store photos, but it costs money for each gigabyte of storage.

So, I’ve given you many ways to store data and transfer data to iPhones, iPads, laptops and even Windows.
