How to recover deleted files

By BY GEORGE GORDON/Computer Guru - | Jul 8, 2022

iOS 16, due to come out sometime this fall, has a couple of cool features.

When you send a message on an iPhone running iOS 16, a 15-minute timer is activated. In that window, you have the option to either edit that message or to undo it entirely.

Once that 15 minutes is up, the text is locked-in, just as all iMessages

The new Mac OS system also coming this fall is now called Ventura, replacing Monterey. I’ll keep you updated on some of the new features starting to come out.

Now I’ll show you a couple of tricks to recover deleted files from your Mac.

Let’s say you dragged a file to the Trash. If you click on Edit at the top left and choose “Redo Move” and the name of the file, it returns back to its original place.

Another way is to open up the Trash, click on the file, then at the top click on File and choose “Put Back.”

Most apps have a “Revert to.” How that works is if you saved a file and then realized you deleted a line of important text, all you have to do to see it again is click on File at the top, choose “Revert to” and scroll through the versions you saved before.

So, let’s say you emptied the Trash. Sorry, you’re screwed… but wait, there is another way to retrieve the deleted files.

Use Time Machine, which has back-ups of all your files. You can return to them for the last hour and day of month to restore the file.

Get ready for the blockbuster: we’re going to recover deleted files on the iCloud Drive.

First we must click on Safari, go to your iCloud website (www.icloud.com) and log in. Now choose Account Settings, scroll all the way down to the bottom and look for Advanced and choose Restore Files. It may take a few minutes for the files to show up, but you can select a file and choose Restore.

But the best yet is you can Restore Contacts and Calendars that you might have messed up on. Reminders has a feature to show completed events. Click on View, click on “show completed” and click on the event you want to restore.

So, let’s say you opened up Photos and drew a mustache on your girlfriend’s photo because she dumped you. But she calls up the next day and wants to start over. Well, quickly open up Photos, click on the mustached photo, choose Edit and click on Revert to Original. Now print it out, go out and have a few drinks!
