Use an external hard drive for storage

By BY GEORGE GORDON/Computer Guru - | May 20, 2022

I had a client come in with 3,280 pictures on his MacBook Pro. He wanted to offload some so that he could get more storage space on his computer.

Well, there are a few ways you can do this. If you’re shopping over at Costco, you can pick up a cheap three-terabyte external hard drive. Once you connect the hard drive by plugging it into the USB port, it will show up on the desktop as a new hard drive icon. Now open up the Photos App, select the pictures you want by holding down the Command key and start clicking on the photos with your mouse. You can also click on Edit at the top and choose Select All if you want to copy them all. When you’re done, click on Edit at the top and choose Copy. Now click your mouse on the new hard drive icon on your desktop. Click on Edit at the top and choose Paste. Whammo — your selected photos are now copied to the new hard drive. That’s probably the easiest way to copy your files over, and you can go back and delete them from your Mac.

Another way is to use the iCloud Drive to store the photos. Most of the time, you have to purchase more gigabyte space that isn’t really expensive. But there is a hidden trick to keep all your photos on the Mac and still have plenty of space.

Your computer will display all your photos, but ones that you haven’t looked at in a long time will be moved off the hard drive and stored in the iCloud. The image is still there, but it’s a thumbnail version that doesn’t take up much space. If you want to see that old photo, you just click on it. It doesn’t instantly pop up — remember that it’s in the cloud and has to be downloaded back on your computer. So in other words, the photos you took back in 2001 of your fourth marriage show on the Mac, and if you click on one, it won’t instantly show up. And if you don’t want to look at it for a few months or so, it’s shoved from the Mac and put back in the iCloud. To do this, open up Photos on your Mac, and at the top right click on Photos, Preferences, iCloud and choose Optimize Mac Storage.

Sometimes I like to read an article from a website, but it’s loaded with ads and I hate scrolling through them. Well, there is an option called Reader View. If you’re in Safari on a website, click on View at the top and choose Show READER. That brings up the same article but without all the graphic pictures and ads.

Another cool feature is in the Mail app. Open up Mail and click on create new mail. If you click on the small + sign, a mini version of the Contact list appears, and you can choose a recipient. Another way is to start typing in the recipient’s name. The first couple of characters you type in will give you the option to choose the right name.

Last is the best trick of the day. Let’s visit New York City. Open up the Maps Apps, and in the search box, type in New York City. A map appears, and by tapping and holding on the name New York, a red dot appears. Click and hold on it — a small frame appears, and by clicking on it, shows a video of the streets. You can navigate forward by clicking your mouse forward or swipe to the right or left to move down the streets. You actually cruise the whole city by moving your mouse up, down or to the right or left.
