Don’t let scammers take control of your computer
Well, it happened again. One of my clients came in and told me he got an e-mail from the Geek Squad, and when he called the number on their website, somebody from India came on, and he let them take over his computer.
Somehow, they “got into his bank account” and told him that he had purchased McAfee for $400, which he didn’t. Telling him that when they tried removing the $400 that was charged to his account, they had made a mistake and instead deposited $4,000, and that he needed to repay them the money or the police would come over and arrest him for criminal activity.
He was told to drive to a store — with his phone on the whole time — and to buy $4,000 worth of gift cards. When he refused and told them it was a scam, he hung up the phone. They called him back 20 times until he finally turned off his phone. Immediately going to the bank, they made him change his password and also told him to call the credit card company.
When he tried open up his computer, they had changed his password so he couldn’t get back on. That’s when he brought the computer over to my place, and I was able to crack the password for him. So again, anytime you hear someone with a foreign accent on the phone trying to take over your computer, immediately HANG UP.
So, you decided to take a road trip over to Waikapu and visit the Chow Fun factory. Getting there and eating a plate of delicious Chow Fun, you decide to text your buddy and tell him where you’re at and to come on over and you’ll buy him a plate. At the top line of the Messinger App is his phone number or name, so just tap on it and a screen appears with “Send My Current Location.” That’s it. Now he can see a map with the address of the Chow Fun factory.
Well, get ready for this! Underneath Send My Current Location is Share My Location. If you happen to click on it and start driving over to the Happy Valley Smoke Goat Store, he can see exactly where you’re going. You’re now being TRACKED.
Also in Messenger is a cool trick where if you turn your iPhone sideways, at the bottom is a squiggly icon. Tapping on it lets you take your finger and draw anything you want on the screen.
